Javanese Postnatal Massage and Jamu Bengkung (Certified Therapist)
New mothers need to have massages before and after birth.
Massaging is one of the most valuable benefits that a new mother can enjoy in order to cope with the physically as well as emotional stress of pregnancy due to hormonal changes and weight gain
The new mother would frequently experience a drastic decrease of blood flow, coupled with an increase of anticoagulants. A good postnatal massage can help increases the flow of blood and oxygen to muscles, getting rid of the toxins in her system.
A new mother tires easily and still has to cope with feeding and giving attention to her newborn. A good massage can help restore the vitality of her body and mind. It’s also a well-known fact that massaging can also assist mothers in successful lactation (for breastfeeding), provide relief and prevent engorgement. It also loosens the ducts to improve milk flow so that her baby can suckle better.
Massage can also firm up the stomach muscles through tummy binding with herbs. This aids to reduce water retention as an additional benefit. Postnatal massage can improve and provide an effective relief from headache, constipation and pain in muscles and joints.
The Jamu massage is usually a full-body massage, (avoiding the breasts if you are breastfeeding) followed by binding (known as bengkung perut) using a piece of cloth or a girdle. In the Jamu massage, your stomach is bound fairly tightly after the massage in order to help it regain its original shape. Aside from the binding, the therapist will also use Jamu herbs, oils and mixtures unique to the region. Common ingredients such as lemongrass and flaxseed oil are often used.
During Jamu massage some mothers do observe very significant results after even the first session. It is fairly common for a woman to lose about 5kg, or shed about 3 inches, after completing a series of massages. The sessions should be done daily. Traditionally, women would go for massages for between 30-40 days which is not commonplace nowadays.
Most people now opt for the 7-10 (or more) days package depending on the requirements at hand or the need to slim down to their ideal shape faster.
If you have had a natural delivery, you can start 5-7 days after. If you have had a C-Section however, it’s best to start after 21 days to a month later.
